OUR BACKGROUND

Who We Are

Founded in 2004, Hoi Polloi Malta serves as the umbrella organisation for a diverse range of artistic endeavours, including the Hoi Polloi Theatre Company, the Hoi Polloi Academy, and the Hoi Polloi Creative Hub. Our mission is to provide a platform where aspiring artists can develop and express their talents through high-quality education, performance opportunities, and creative collaboration.

Hoi Polloi Theatre Company was our initial venture, dedicated to producing a wide range of live performances that offer emerging and experienced artists alike the opportunity to showcase their talents. Through these productions, we have consistently contributed to Malta's vibrant cultural scene, producing everything from classic plays to contemporary theatre.

In August 2013, we expanded our commitment to arts education by launching the Hoi Polloi Academy (HPA). Inspired by the story of Billy Elliot, the academy is dedicated to discovering and nurturing talent from all walks of life. We believe that, like Billy—a UK coal miner’s son who discovered his passion for ballet—many undiscovered artists have the potential to make it in the theatre scene both locally and internationally. Our academy's excellence was recognized when our students won the "Achievement in Acting" award at the 2024 Junior Theatre Festival in Birmingham, organized by Music Theatre International (MTI).

To further support our growing community of artists, we established the Creative Hub in 2018.
This dynamic space unites all our artistic and educational activities under one roof, offering a vibrant environment where creativity, innovation, and collaboration can flourish. The Creative Hub hosts the academy’s classes, workshops, and performances, and has become a cornerstone for artistic development in Malta.
