In October, Hoi Polloi Academy (HPA) and the Creative Hub raised €350 through their Pink Week initiative, presenting the amount to the Action For Breast Cancer Foundation Malta on Friday, the 27th.
Hoist the curtain, spread the love
As the autumn days grew shorter and the nights colder, the passionate HPA community painted October pink with heart, kindness, and a touch of theatrical flair, amidst the buzz of Halloween costume preparations. Their charitable initiative, Pink Week, was kickstarted by a bake sale at the Creative Hub in Qormi on Thursday, the 12th.
Donations continued streaming in until the remarkable sum of €350 was raised and presented to Ms. Ruth Guillaumier on behalf of Action For Breast Cancer Foundation Malta on Friday, the 27th.
In the true spirit of a heartwarming Disney classic, the bake sale brought the budding community together. While the community's mums, dads and staff passionately whipped up delectable treats, the students gleefully seized the chance to showcase their passion for crafting a brighter world.
This initiative was not just about selling tasty treats; it embodied the belief that understanding others is key, a principle ingrained in the very fabric of HPA and the Creative Hub’s ethos.
"We teach empathy, not just jazz hands," expressed Marco Calleja, Director of Hoi Polloi Malta and a seasoned thespian in the local scene. “What better way to comprehend and embody our characters in the script than by stepping into the shoes of others in our daily lives?”
Through social responsibility and active citizenship, the young stars learned that life's lessons extend far beyond the confines of the classroom.
A history of giving
Pink Week stands as a testament to HPA's nature of giving back. Since the beginning, the academy has been at the forefront of promoting social responsibility, wellbeing, and empathy.
During the COVID-19 pandemic, HPA took several initiatives to help its students cope with the stress and anxiety caused by the pandemic. The Hoi Polloi Community’s adventure through the Covid19 pandemic was masterminded and curated by Erika Quinn with the help and support of Hoi Polloi parents. The Academy also introduced yoga and mindfulness as part of its curriculum, prioritising the mental wellbeing of its parents, staff, and students.
In addition, HPA’s Musikidz choir performed at an old people’s home last Christmas, spreading joy and happiness among the elderly. Last year’s school production, HomeBound, was devised by HPA students and dealt with climate change, waste, and community.
